Pet battles in World of Warcraft are serious business, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. On the surface, pet battles may seem like an insignificant time sink, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, pet battles are the whole package – they’re fun, engaging and offer a unique take on the game.

WoW Pet Battle Guide
Right off the bat, we’re here to tell you that pet battles are fairly straightforward. There’s no steep learning curve and you’ll grasp the basics right away.
First of all, you need to have pets in order to do pet battles. This is a no-brainer. You’ll require at least 3 pets in order to start doing pet battles. For the sake of time, we advise you to purchase your first 3 pets from the auction house. Our rare WoW pets guide should give you a general idea of where to start first.
Before you head out into the world, make sure to check out your battle pet trainer in either faction’s capital city – Audrey Burnhep in Stormwind or Varzok in Orgrimmar. These can teach you pet battling and you can even purchase some starter pets from them, just in case you didn’t get any previously.
Finally, once that’s out of the way, you should be ready to explore the vast world of Azeroth in search of new pets to battle and tame. Every single zone in the game has a large number of pets scattered around. You can either look for them or use some of the best WoW addons to automate the process. Depends on whether you want to spoil the challenge or not.
Pet Battle Combat
Combat is arguably the most fun part of pet battles in World of Warcraft. If you’re a fan of Pokemon or someone who enjoyed playing the old JRPGs like Final Fantasy, you’ll be right at home.
The combat is turn-based. There’s no time limit and you’re not in any rush, which allows you to carefully plan each and every move. Once you make the first move, the opponent will make theirs.

This simple aspect becomes much more strategic once you include thousands of pets with different abilities into the mix. Theoretically, all of them function in different ways and bring different skills to the table. So ultimately, it is you who has to figure out the most successful strategy.
Additionally, pets come in various types, breeds and rarities, which we’ll discuss further in this next section.
Types of Pets
There are 10 main pet types, or pet families if you will. Each individual type will have a certain strength and a certain weakness, and those will also be reflected in their skills.
For example, Beast type pets deal 50% more damage to Critter pets, but take 50% damage from Mechanical pets. Knowing this, you’ll have to adjust and change your pet formations depending on the fight.

Pet Breed and Rarity
All pet types come in different breeds and rarities. Some will roll with fixed breeds, so you’ll always know what stats your pet will have, but other times the results will be random.
Different Pet Breeds:
- B – Balanced
- H – Health
- P – Power
- S – Speed
These breed stats can roll randomly on your battle pets, which is why it’s important to focus on the right ones. Generally, finding a pet with both Speed or Power stats is preferable. Those will usually be S/S or P/P pets, so look out for them.
As far as rarity goes, it’s rather simple. Just like any World of Warcraft item, WoW pets can be common, uncommon and rare. You can upgrade their rarity with certain pet stones, so it’s not a big deal if you tame a common pet at first.
Leveling Pets
Unlike toys and some of the best World of Warcraft mounts, battle pets can actually be leveled. Their maximum level is 25, which is when they achieve their peak stats. This WoW pet battle guide will teach you how to level quickly and efficiently.
First of all, the usual way to level pets is to go out in the world and fight other pets of similar level. But that’s way too time consuming and there are far more efficient ways to do this.

Garrison leveling
Garrisons were introduced back in Warlords of Draenor and they’re not really that useful nowadays. However, pet battles are one of the exceptions.
During certain days, you will be able to visit your Garrison Menagerie and continuously fight pets there in order to level your low level pets. The strategy is to bring two max level pets to carry your level 1 pet.
If you really want to maximize your efficiency, make sure to bring a Safari Hat (10% exp), use a Pet Treat (50% exp) and a Lesser Pet Treat (25% exp) and watch your exp fly. If you’re lucky, you’ll do this while the Pet Battle Bonus Event is live, which will double all your exp gains.
Battle-Training Stones
Another way of in wow how to level battle pets fast is through battle-training stones. These stones can immediately grant your pet a fixed number of levels. Ultimate battle-training stone grants 25 levels to a single pet, which makes it highly desirable and unique. If you get one, make sure to use it wisely. Better yet, save it in case there’s a new pet on the WoW Trading Post that you really like.
