Dinidoridae stinkbugs, a small family exclusive to Asia, have long been overlooked in scientific research compared to their larger relatives. Previous studies focused on the unusual hind leg organs of female Dinidoridae, but most relied on taxonomic and morphological approaches.

"Some taxonomists described an enlarged part on the hind legs resembling tympanal organs found in crickets," explained Takema Fukatsu, an evolutionary biologist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tokyo. Based on this resemblance, these structures were classified as tympanal organs.

But Fukatsu's team decided to dig deeper. Their initial goal was to understand the impact of this unusual organ placement on the females' hearing abilities. What they discovered was astonishing.

"We found no tympanal membrane and no sensory neurons," Fukatsu revealed. "Instead, the enlarged parts were filled with thousands of small pores, each housing benign filamentous fungi."

These pores were connected to secretory cells, which Fukatsu's team believes release nutrients to support fungal growth. In essence, these stinkbugs carry portable fungal nurseries on their legs!
