Hi Madhu!

Lying in bed or on the bed is correct. The verb is 'to lie' (meaning put yourself in a horizontal or resting position) and its gerund form is lying.

The other verb you're thinking of is 'to lay' (meaning put sy/sg down gently or carefully) and its gerund form is laying.

I hope this helps! :)

I constantly hear native speakers say "lay" where " lie" should be. Is it because they think one might be confused by "lie" having another meaning?

I wouldn't think so, Dina. It's just one of those misconceptions people have about a foreign language.

"дина" specifically stated that NATIVE speakers in English make the mistake constantly. I don't think he was talking about misconceptions.

I agree with the comment above and think the answer to дина'a question is, "yes."I believe native speakers get it wrong because they think, "Well, 'lie' (meaning: tell a lie) in bed is wrong..."But "I am lying in bed" is correct for both the meaning of "prone" and "say something untrue".

Lying in bedI'm a native English speaker in America. People are not confusing it with telling a lie while in bed. The proper usage of the two words isn't emphasized in school enough. As careful as I try to be with them, I still get them confused. I was never clearly taught the difference as a child.
