Coming off a hot streak with two wins and two more podiums in his last four races, Verstappen’s form has been so impressive that it has sent ripples of concern through rivals, including the McLaren team, who are now questioning their own championship chances. Despite occasional frustrations with his Red Bull car, Verstappen’s on-track prowess remains undeniable, and he never shies away from speaking his mind.
After clinching victory in Baku, Verstappen expressed his dissatisfaction with the C6 tires that Pirelli had chosen for the event. The tire manufacturer anticipated the softer C6 compound would excel under the track conditions in Azerbaijan, but the reality fell far short of expectations. Verstappen explained that the tire made his car slower from the very start of each lap and labeled that particular tire type “inferior.” He suggested that Pirelli should consider shelving the C6 entirely due to its underperformance in race conditions.
How did Pirelli react to this direct call-out? Initially, the Italian tire giant planned to deploy the C6 tires at upcoming races such as Singapore and Las Vegas. However, after Verstappen’s comments and further evaluation, they reversed course and opted to use harder compounds for the rest of the season instead.
Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Racing Director, addressed the changes and Verstappen's critique candidly. Although he hasn’t yet spoken personally to Verstappen, Isola acknowledged the Swedish driver’s points weren’t without merit. The company scrapped the C6’s scheduled appearances because Singapore’s higher energy demands and Las Vegas’s temperature posed risks like tire graining, making the softer tire unsuitable for those conditions.
Isola also confirmed that the C6 and C5 tires were too similar in performance, which caused confusion and limited strategic diversity on race days. As a result, Pirelli plans to redesign the compounds for the upcoming year to create a clearer performance gap between these softer tires, ensuring each fulfills a distinct role on the track.
