And then life happened and time got away from me.

And all of a sudden Easter was just a few days away and other than a little light spring decor in my hutch, my house was looking anything but festive.

What You Need to Make a Wood Bead Easter Bunny

Homemade Easter decorations can be just as cute as store-bought ones—even more so when you create them using materials that you already have and that you love to work with. I have created several crafts with wooden beads. A long time ago I made a tea trivet from thrifted wood beads, and more recently I made a tassel and key wood bead garland. I still had some wooden beads leftover from those projects, some white painted wood beads, and some original wooden beads. I decided to use those.

The rest of my materials were very simple. I had a bit of leftover fabric from a felted sweater dress (the result of a laundry mishap) that was the perfect grey for the bunny ears. The rest was just regular old twine and some craft glue.

DIY Wood Bunnies from Beads

There are only a few easy steps involved in making these wooden Easter bunnies.

  1. Select your beads to make a bunny shape
  2. Add twine or yarn to make a hanger for your bunnies
  3. Assemble two beads to form the bunny
  4. Cut and glue the bunny ears
  5. Enjoy decorating with your wood bead bunnies

I used only beads I had on hand. I chose the two biggest sizes and created two kinds of bunnies. One with only two large beads, and one that combined a large bead and a smaller one. Play around with the beads you have (or are will purchase) to find the bunny shape that you like best.

Tie your twine in a loop and knot and thread the twine through the beads. Add a drop of glue to the knot before pushing it up the bottom bead. This will secure the twine inside the bead.

Add a bit of glue between the two beads too. I used fast-drying craft glue, but a dab of hot glue would work perfectly too. Make sure you wipe away any access and spilled glue. Depending on your glue let it dry until all the beads and the twine are safely secured to each other. I think the bunnies still look cute with two equal-sized beads, but I like the bunnies with the smaller wooden beads heads the most. It’s a matter of what you have and what you prefer really.

Draw some bunny ears on paper and cut them out from your fabric.

I designed a simple bunny ear and drew it in three different sizes. As you can see the largest one was about 4 cm (2 inches in height).

I cut out my bunny ears from my felted fabric. You can use any kind of material that is stiff enough so it will stand up on its own. Craft felt, faux leather, and thick vinyl or paper would all work.

Fold the bottom of the ears together and push them into the top of the top bead. I found that the back of a small crochet needle was helpful in pushing it in. The felted material I used was quite thick, so when I pushed both ears into the top hole it was all tight and secure. If needed you can add a drop of glue at this stage.

If you’d like you could add a bunny tail. You could paint one with a pen or add a tiny pompom. Drawing a little bunny face would look nice too. I opted for the primitive look and did not add any tails.

Done and dusted!

I hung my little bunnies in a simple spring bouquet. Some glass containers with faux white eggs are the perfect addition to finish off this quick and easy Easter decor.

I think these are truly adorable little bunnies that turned out so cute!
